{Современные словари переводят английское выражение "the crack of doom" как "трубный глас, возвещающий день страшного суда".} В современный язык это выражение пришло из "Макбет" (акт 4, сцена 1, строка 117), где cracke of Doome означало "провозглашение Судного Дня" ударом ("crack") или раскатом грома: таково обычное толкование; но это может быть и "звук трубы, возвещающей конец света", поскольку "crack" – это и внезапный звук рогов или труб (как в Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, строки 116, 1166). В повествовании "crack" использовано в значении "трещина, расщелина", и относится к вулканической расщелине в кратере горы Orodruin в Мордоре. См. далее Doom и Mount Doom. -
